Back Pain

back pain relief

Back pain is one of the most common injuries you hear people complain about in Henry County, and the second most common reason for doctor's visits nationally.  With so many potential causes, it is not hard to believe that almost everyone experiences back pain at least once in their lifetime. But the questions remain, what causes back pain and how can chiropractic care help treat it?

  • Shooting or stabbing pain

  • Pain that radiates down your leg

  • Pain that worsens with bending, lifting, standing or walking

  • Pain that improves with reclining

BACK PAIN PREVENTION

Factors such as better nutrition, exercise, ergonomic workspaces, and proper lifting and movement techniques can go a long way in helping people to strengthen their spines and potentially avoid serious injury and chronic pain. When back pain hits, research shows that a conservative approach to treatment is the best option.

BACK PAIN TREATMENT

A 2012 study supported that the likelihood of surgery for workers was 1.5% for patients who sought chiropractic care for back pain relief first versus 42.7% who first sought medical care.  ASIC Rehab Chiropractors take a collaborative approach to treating back pain.  We start with the least invasive methods first.  Our chiropractors administer the chiropractic adjustment, which is performed by hand, as the primary form of care.  Many adjustments require a patient to lie on their stomach on top of a specially designed chiropractic treatment table.  The doctor will apply gentle yet specific thrusts, or in some cases utilize a handheld device to perform the adjustment.  In most cases, physiotherapeutic care and other adjunctive therapy will be used.

STRESS AND BACK PAIN

Anxiety and nervousness can often lead to muscle tension.  As levels of stress hormones increase in your body, so does the severity of the muscular tension.  Over time, these tight muscles can lead to chronic back pain.  Coping with these psychological and emotional factors can have a direct impact on your physical health.  ASIC Rehab doctors can guide you in an exercise regimen that will assist in helping you find relief and provide a coping method for future flare-ups.  We will also recommend a session with our licensed massage therapist.  These massage experiences can help alleviate emotional stresses and address physical aches and pains.

SPORTS AND BACK PAIN

Any sports activity in which improper body mechanics is used can damage the back, e.g. a jerky golf swing or the incorrect use of exercise equipment. Cyclists often experience LBP, which can be resolved by adjusting the angle of the bicycle seat.

Some research suggests that, over time, high-impact exercise such as rugby or aerobics may increase the risk for degenerative disc disease. In turn, hyperextension of the spine (as in gymnastics, pole-vaulting, weightlifting, football and cricket, especially in the case of bowlers) may lead to a stress fracture (spondylolysis).

Back strain is the most common sports injury. This refers to injury of the lower back (lumbar) spine’s soft tissues (muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons and blood vessels).

BACK PAIN PREGNANCY

Due to the shifting of abdominal organs, the forward redistribution of body weight (the same as in people with excessive abdominal obesity), and the loosening of ligaments in the pelvic area prior to delivery, pregnant women are at high risk for back pain.

BACK PAIN RELIEF CREAM

While the chiropractic adjustment and manual therapies are the primary forms of treatment, patients often require additional pain relief methods.  We have identified CBD Ointment as a cream that has been effective in bringing relief to acute injuries.  It has helped football should injuries, hip pains and has even helped relieve pain for conditions like multiple sclerosis.  CBD comes in different levels depending on the pain scale, and can easily be ordered through ASIC Rehab.  If you are in need of such cream, please contact our office and we will be happy to assist.
